NALG: On Premise to AWS Cloud migration

Challenges
The primary challenges during the migration included:
1. Migrating File Servers with Permissions
- The existing file servers contained terabytes of data with complex NTFS permissions. Maintaining data integrity and preserving the same user access permissions post-migration was critical.
- Ensuring minimal disruption for end-users during the migration process.
2. Legacy ERP and Oracle Systems
- The ERP system (Microsoft AX 2012) and Oracle database systems were legacy applications that were heavily integrated with on-premises infrastructure.
- These applications required careful re-platforming for compatibility with AWS while ensuring performance and reliability.
3. Active Directory Migration
- Migrating and extending on-premises Active Directory (AD) to AWS Cloud while maintaining user authentication, group policies, and domain trust relationships.
4. High Availability and Disaster Recovery
- Implementing a scalable and redundant architecture across multiple AWS regions. o Ensuring a robust Disaster Recovery (DR) plan with minimal Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO).
Solution Architecture
The solution provided by iNTEL-CS addressed these challenges using a combination of AWS services and best practices:
1. File Server Migration
- Migrated the file servers to Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP to maintain file system compatibility, performance, and NTFS permissions.
- Used AWS DataSync for fast and secure data transfer while preserving metadata and permissions.
- Verified user access with minimal downtime, ensuring a seamless transition for all end-users.
2. Legacy ERP System Migration
- The ERP system (Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012) was re-platformed onto Amazon EC2 Windows instances for better performance and scalability.
- Application data and backend databases were optimized using Amazon EBS for high IOPS storage.
3. Oracle Systems Migration
- Migrated the Oracle databases to Amazon RDS for Oracle to reduce operational overhead and improve reliability.
- Conducted schema validation and performance testing to ensure database consistency post-migration.
4. Active Directory Integration
- Deployed AWS Directory Service (AD Connector) to extend on- premises AD to AWS Cloud seamlessly.
- Ensured compatibility with existing group policies and authentication processes across the AWS infrastructure.
5. Disaster Recovery and High Availability
- Built a DR environment in the me-south-1 region, replicating critical workloads, including ERP, Oracle systems, and file servers.
- Amazon Route 53 was used for DNS failover to ensure high availability.
Key AWS Services Used
• Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP: Migrated file servers with NTF
permissions.
• AWS DataSync: High-speed data migration for large file servers.
• Amazon RDS for Oracle: Managed relational database with automated
backups and scaling.
• Amazon EC2: Hosted ERP systems (Microsoft AX 2012) for scalability and flexibility.
• AWS Directory Service (AD Connector): Seamless integration with on-
premises AD.
• Amazon Route 53: DNS routing and failover.
• Amazon CloudWatch: Centralized monitoring and alerting.
• AWS Systems Manager: Streamlined resource and patch management.

Benefits
1. Preserved Permissions and Data Integrity: Migrated file servers to FSx while maintaining NTFS permissions.
2. Improved Legacy System Performance: Optimized ERP and Oracle systems for cloud scalability.
3. Reduced Operational Overhead: RDS for Oracle eliminated database management burdens.
4. High Availability: Multi-region architecture ensured 99.99% uptime.
5. Enhanced Disaster Recovery: Replication to DR site with minimal RTO and RPO.
6. Centralized Identity Management: Active Directory seamlessly extended to AWS.
Outcome
The successful migration of file servers, ERP systems, Oracle databases, and Active Directory enabled NALG to achieve:
- Enhanced operational performance and application responsiveness.
- High availability with zero disruption to critical systems.
- Seamless user experience with preserved file permissions and centralized authentication.
- Cost savings by leveraging managed AWS services.
